• 12 and 60 years old
• Have a diagnosis of sickle cell anemia
• Have had at least one sickle cell disease related crisis or complication per year on an average of 3 years or one episode of acute chest syndrome over the prior 5 years
• Be willing to comply with all study procedures
• Not be participating in a regular blood transfusion program
• Not need required therapy for Hepatitis B or Hepatitis C
• Not have a history of alcohol or substance abuse within the previous 5 years
• Not have used an investigational drug or participated in an investigational study within 30 days of screening
• Not be pregnant
• Not be breast-feeding
• Not be infected with the HIV -1
• Not have any untreated severe psychiatric conditions
